On Thursday, thousands of demonstrators from across Peru gathered in Lima, facing a large police presence.

The December removal of former President Pedro Castillo and strong dissatisfaction over living conditions and inequality in the Andean country ignited a weeks-long protest movement that seeks a full government reset.

The national Ombudsman’s office reported Thursday that 54 individuals have been murdered in conflicts with security forces since the unrest began, and 772, including security professionals, have been injured.
